World Economic Forum on the Middle East and North Africa
Marrakech, Morocco, 26-28 October 2010
Middle East and North Africa “Social Entrepreneurs of the Year” Awarded
Two Social Entrepreneurs – one from Morocco and one from Tunisia – were recognized as leading social innovators during a plenary session at the World Economic Forum on the Middle East and North Africa, Marrakech, Morocco on 26 October. The awards were conferred by Hilde Schwab, Co-Founder and Chairperson of the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship.
Social Entrepreneurs provide innovative, cost-effective, scalable solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges – a critical resource in today’s economic climate. They blend business acumen with social objectives to address poverty and environmental challenges, and can, with limited resources, have transformative effects – not just on marginalized communities and populations where they often work, but also on entire sectors and economies.
Mhammed Abbad Andaloussi
Al Jisr
Morocco
Al Jisr has mobilized all parts of Moroccan society which have a vested interest in improving educational outcomes. He has succeeded in fostering true public-private partnerships in the education sector. With support from the Moroccan Ministry of Education, over 100 of Morocco’s leading companies have adopted 300 Moroccan schools. Business executives volunteer their time, resources and management expertise to join forces with parents, teachers and administrators on “school support councils” that improve key indicators of each school’s performance. Al Jisr’s efforts have already impacted the quality of education and school facilities for 150,000 students in 300 schools. Mr Andaloussi aims to reach 1,000 schools across Morocco by 2014.
Hamida Essma Ben Hamida
enda inter-arabe
Tunisia
Enda inter arabe was co-founded by Essma Ben Hamida and her husband, Michael Cracknell, in 1990. Today it is the first and only best-practice microfinance institution in Tunisia with a staff of 750 across 60 branches. Enda serves 140,000 active clients with a US$ 48 million loan portfolio and a repayment rate above 99%. In addition to issuing traditional lines of credit, enda has developed specialized products including education loans, housing loans and agricultural products. Now expanding rapidly in rural areas, enda aims to have 100 branches across Tunisia by 2012. Ms Ben Hamida is also a founding member and former chair of Sanabel, the Arabic Microfinance Network, with 78 member MFIs in 12 Arab countries.

Annual Meeting of New Champions
Tianjin, People’s Republic of China, 13-15 September
Accomplishing Great Things Together
DSC_6846 (Large) As the Annual Meeting of the New Champions in Tianjin, China draws to an end, the 29 participating Social Entrepreneurs can look back on four intense days. They were among the 1,500 participants contributing to the official sessions focusing on a wide range of topics under the theme of "Driving Growth through Sustainability". In addition, we set up a series of meetings that particularly focused on collaborative action. The first of these meetings just brought together the Social Entrepreneurs of the Schwab Foundation community. At the meeting, a number of task forces were kickstarted, looking at issues of common interest among Social Entrepreneurs (i.e. finding talent and a successor and “The Social Entrepreneur's Guide on Working with Social Investors”) as well as issues with a cross-cutting approach to other World Economic Forum initiatives (“Renewable Energy” and “New Visions for Agriculture”).
The next private session was designed to increase the interaction between Social Entrepreneurs and Young Global Leaders. They met in small groups around topics such as employment, financial inclusion and water. Another winning combination proved to be the combination of Technology Pioneers and Social Entrepreneurs in a second WorkSpace meeting. The challenge posed to the group was to identify technical solutions to enhance and scale the innovations of the Social Entrepreneurs and to identify how high tech could be brought to the base of the pyramid. All three sessions provided a glimpse of what can be achieved when Social Entrepreneurs and other action-oriented visionaries come together. Paul Jeremaes, facilitator of the joint Technology Pioneer session and Director of Innovations Center at Hewlett Packard quoted Anatole France: “To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe". At this meeting, Social Entrepreneurs, Young Global Leaders and Technology Pioneers have started to act, dream and believe together!
The Asia Social Entrepreneurs of the Year
Three Social Entrepreneurs have been recognized as leading social innovators in Asia during the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting of the New Champions 2010, Tianjin, People’s Republic of China, 13-15 September.
The Asia Social Entrepreneur of the Year Awards have been conferred by Hilde Schwab, Co-Founder and Chairperson of the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship. “With Asia driving much of today’s economic progress, it is even more important that people are not left behind in the development process. Social entrepreneurship plays a key role in ensuring inclusive growth.” said Schwab.
Social entrepreneurs have an important lesson to share in today’s economic climate. They emphasize long-term sustainability instead of short-term gain. Their primary focus is to maximize benefits for society and the environment through innovative and effective business models. Their approach to entrepreneurship is one of sustainable economic growth across sectors and industries, from renewable energy and education to waste management, health and rural development.
The Winners:
