Newsletter - July 2011
We would like to share with you some of the highlights of the past two months which include the active participation of more than 50 social entrepreneurs at four regional World Economic Forum meetings (Latin America, Africa and Europe and Central Asia, East Asia), the selection of 14 new social entrepreneurs as “Social Entrepreneurs of the Year”, the final report from the Global Agenda Council on Social Innovation and the launch of the Social Investment Manual. The manual, a product of the social investment task force, has been in high demand and we hope it will help social entrepreneurs navigate smoother through the process of raising capital from an investor. As we continue to build on this manual, comments and questions are very welcome.
You will also find information on our upcoming activities, including the Annual Meeting of New Champions or “Summer Davos” in Dalian, People’s Republic of China, 14-16 September. “New Champions” are five communities of the World Economic Forum: the Technology Pioneers, the Global Growth Companies, the Young Global Leaders, the Young Scientists and, of course, the Social Entrepreneurs.
We will let you discover more below.
Warm regards, Mirjam Schöning and the Schwab Foundation Team

The Social Investment Manual
On Tuesday 31 May, during the Social Capital Markets (SoCap) conference in Amsterdam, the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship task force launched its Social Investment Manual.
This manual is the first of its kind. It provides social investees a comprehensive yet easy to use guidebook on how to develop successful relationships with social investors. The guidebook presents an overview of the social investment landscape, offers concrete approaches to finding and approaching the right investors for social enterprises, as well as the best practices for having a successful due diligence process and for negotiating a mutually beneficial long-term social investment arrangement.
The manual, which was created with the research support of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and with the support of a task force of 18 Schwab Fellow Social Entrepreneurs led by Andreas Heinecke, Schwab Fellow and Chief Executive Officer/Founder of Dialogue Social Enterprise,
|
|
provides a valuable first step for many social enterprises to develop the informational know-how to position themselves best and to leverage opportunities for social investment that can increase the scale, scope and impact of their organizations.
During the first two days, the manual was downloaded about 1,000 times and the announcement of it was read by over 2,000 readers. The task force welcomes your comments to keep building this manual as a useful resource for social entrepreneurs. Please contact us to share your input (abigail.noble@schwabfound.org).

The Global Agenda Council on Social Innovation
During the 2010-2011 term, the Global Agenda Council on Social Innovation focused on one of the most significant barriers to scale: access to capital. Given the recent excitement on impact investing, the council tried to separate the hype from reality during a spring discussion series that explored a number of themes, including overall market potential, average deal flow size, return expectations, and trade-offs.
|
|
The members of the Global Agenda Council on Social Innovation include leading Schwab Foundation Social Entrepreneurs, top academics in the field of social entrepreneurship and pioneers in impact investing with a decade or more of experience. The council’s objective is to align the impact investment and social enterprise communities on expectations, capabilities and returns by sharing experiences and exploring emerging issues and trends. The council’s findings can be read here. Do you have a reaction to the findings or a story to share, or would you like to get involved in this initiative?
