World Economic Forum on Africa
Dar es Salaam, Tanzania 5-7 May 2010

During the main Africa meeting, 18 Social Entrepreneurs participated, most of whom were included in private meetings that covered issues such as mobile finance, education and agriculture.

In the public programme, 11 Social Entrepreneurs provided important input into the formal discussions from their perspectives, ensuring the agenda continues to look at equitable approaches to economic development and focuses on opportunities to include poorer segments of the population.

During an IdeasLab entitled “The Business of Social Change” four Social Entrepreneurs from Africa presented their models to addressing social challenges on the continent and beyond. A lively workshop followed the presentations with key business and government figures in the room contributing ideas and networks to the potential expansion of the initiatives. Simon Harford, Partner and Head of Africa for the private equity firm Actis, facilitated the session and noted that “Social entrepreneurship is playing an increasingly important role in Africa’s economic development and a dramatic extension of its contribution would bring manifold benefits to the continent.” The four Social Entrepreneurs presenting were:

• Nick Moon, KickStart, Kenya
• Shona Mc Donald, Shonaquip, South Africa
• Victoria Kisyombe, Sero Lease and Finance (Selfina), Tanzania
• Kovin Naidoo, International Center for Eye Care Education (ICEE), South Africa

World Economic Forum on Europe
Brussels, Belgium 10-11 May 2010

Fifteen social entrepreneurs from Scotland to the Ukraine and everywhere in between joined the first Europe meeting in a long time. During a Sunday afternoon Social Entrepreneurs session, we defied all language barriers and openly discussed the effects of the financial crisis on social entrepreneurs in Europe. While the “demand” or number of “clients” has clearly been increasing, government support in particular is on the wane across the continent. Dája Kabátova, Czech Social Entrepreneur of the Year 2008, summarized the situation when she relayed that in December they were basically closing down. Then they opened a bakery and are making solid profits. Strengthening their own ability to generate resources is becoming key.

Social Entrepreneurs added an important and diverse voice to a meeting that was primarily highlighting the European crisis.
