Collective Social Innovation

Today’s most pressing challenges – rising inequality, environmental crises and social fragmentation – are too complex for any single organisation to solve alone. Collective social innovation offers a new way forward, bringing together diverse stakeholders to create systemic change.

The Future of Innovation is Collective

This cover story from the Stanford Social Innovation Review's Summer 2025 issue explores how collective approaches are reshaping innovation. It reveals the unique values, structures, and practices that power successful collaborative efforts, offering essential insights for anyone working to address today's most urgent social issues.

In recent history, society has championed the lone innovator – an archetype that sees individuals working independently to devise and advance new ideas. Impacts and achievements are often attributed back to a single ‘heroic leader’ or organisation, while the work involved to build relationships and consensus takes a back seat in popular narratives. Even our legal and financial systems are designed for individual organisations. Yet, true innovation rarely emerges in solitude. It lies in our interaction with others, in the sharing of information accrued over time and across generations and communities. It takes place when we collaborate to solve shared problems, and we certainly have no shortage of these today.

The Future is Collective: Advancing Collective Social Innovation to Address Society’s Biggest Challenges

Developed by the Schwab Foundation in collaboration with our community of collective social innovators, this report explores how social innovation can unite diverse stakeholders for large-scale social change. It highlights the values, strategies and organizing models that enable multistakeholder collaborations to thrive. Through case studies – explored in greater depth in the companion report, The Future is Collective: Case Studies of Collective Social Innovation – it demonstrates how collective social innovators are rethinking collaboration amid global crises.
