# Redefining value

From outcome-based finance to tradable impact

## A healthy society and economy?

Like a doctor who only measures a patient’s pulse, we currently limit our measurement of economic and often societal health, to Gross Domestic Product (macroeconomic) or Profits (microeconomic). This limited view of economic activity impacts impact-first innovators heavily. Beyond their financial performance, they create valuable impact for people and planet. But this impact remains largely unvalued from an economic perspective.

## Redefining value and making impact tradable

Building on the examples of social innovators and their supporting ecosystem, this initiative aims to showcase mechanisms that make impact tradable and economically valuable.

### Engage the Private Sector in Outcome-Based Financing

Highlight how the private sector can benefit from engagements in outcome-based funding and showcase the business potential for this space.

### Inform Policy Makers about Standardising Impact

Enable conversations between policymakers, social innovators and the OBF ecosystem to integrate valuable insights into upcoming regulation.

### Inspire a Global Discourse on the Valuation of Impact

Launch a discourse about the opportunity of the systematic enhancement of economic principles to support the valuation of impact.

## Limited toolbox

Most regulatory actions on impact (specifically climate change) have been focused on creating restrictions and prohibitions, with the exception of subsidies which are limited in their volume and durability as they are restricted by fiscal budgets and legislative periods. This initiative explores market-based approaches to providing impact incentives for social and environmental action.

## Key outputs

### Engage the Private Sector in Outcome-Based Financing

– Map the landscape of outcome-based funding and publish a landscape report– Create recommendations for private sector engagements– Create recommendations for the ecosystem to evolve OBF

### Inform Regulation and Social Taxonomies

– Synthesise "lessons learned" from carbon markets / OBF for regulators– Distill potential approaches for social taxonomies

### Inspire a Global Discourse on the Valuation of Impact

– Explore opportunities for tradable social impact and exchanges– Publish a white-paper for an impact currency, impact exchanges and other forms of tradable impact for exploration in 2025

## Communities and legitimacy

This initiative follows several core principles, chief amongst them are a community-first approach and a strong requirement for legitimacy. This means our work focuses on creating solutions that allow communities and proximate leaders to define impact in a bottoms-up approach. And it furthermore priorities a process to identify organisations with democratic legitimacy to shape and further the concepts of tradable impact.
